Happiness is a goal that the majority of people on this planet want to achieve. There can be so many obstacles in the way of that such as relationships not working out, a work colleague who has taken a disliking to you or even things like trying to lose weight and not making any progress with it.

Most of the time, people don’t seem to realise the things they’re doing to prevent themselves from finding happiness so here is a list of secrets to happiness and how to block out the things that are preventing you from being happy.

1. Spend Time Outside.
There should be no excuses for you to stay cooped up indoors all day! Even if it’s wandering out into your garden for 10 minutes or so, it’s an excellent way to put yourself in a good mood! The outdoors is associated with better mental health!

2. Get More and Better Sleep.
Switch off your phone before bed, if you’re struggling to fall asleep – read a book instead! Research shows that not sleeping enough may lead to lower levels of optimism. Get yourself plenty of hours each night to ensure 100% happiness the following day!

3. Meditation.
Practising meditation is a superb way to increase your happiness levels! It’s perfect for mindfulness and relaxation. Meditating has many health benefits too, so it’s a win-win!

4. Keep Busy!
Meet up with friends, go out for a coffee, go for a long stroll! Keep your mind busy and occupied. This will make you feel more productive resulting in a good mood!

5. Get Things Done!
If you mark things off your to-do list and stay focused and on top of important things you will feel so much better! Getting things done that need doing is a great relief which triggers happiness!

“Watching too much television can triple our hunger for more possessions while reducing our personal contentment by about 5 percent for every hour a day we watch.”David Niven

6. Stop Letting Chores Pile Up!
Has your washing basket been overflowing for weeks now? Is the number of unread emails increasing day by day? Try to prevent things piling up because you’re only creating stress for yourself by doing this.

7. Stop Watching So Much Reality Television!
Sometimes it’s hard to stop ourselves from watching another episode of Made in Chelsea or Big Brother, but it’s not great for you! Watching reality tv is time-consuming and gives you a morphed vision of reality! Try putting on a cooking programme or a good film!

“Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.”Jim Rohn

8. Careless Spending!
Try to save some money! Make your lunch instead of buying it, restyle old clothing rather than buying new clothes!

9. Stop Comparing!
People often look at other people and think ‘I wish I looked like that’ or ‘I wish I had that career.’ Stop! Be yourself. You never know what is going on behind closed doors, focus on YOUR happiness!

10. Stop Ignoring Your Worth and Abilities!
Don’t ignore your talents and creative ability! For example, a study from the Harvard School of Public Health revealed that art helps to reduce stress and anxiety, increase positive emotions, and lessen the likelihood of depression, along with many other benefits.

Anything that you feel is preventing you from being happy is so easy to change! Don’t let things get you down and follow this advice to send you on your way to true happiness!
